20 Large-Cap Stocks Still Maintain 25%-Plus Total Return Over Trailing 12 Months

While many prominent equities have delivered significant losses amid one of the largest market selloffs in nearly a century, few large-cap stocks have managed to preserve some of their previous gains and still offer total returns of more than 25% over the trailing 12-month period.

Some investors believe that the most battered stocks during the current market pullback are best investment opportunities because these equities have more room on the upside to advance before they return to the previous levels. That might be true. However, the equities that managed to maintain their short-term positive gains offer strong fundamentals and can still set new highs.

Large-cap stocks are particularly conducive for delivering long-term growth because these companies tend to be more stable and offer steady share price growth. Generally stocks of established companies that have been around for a while, the share prices of theses equities frequently have lower volatility. With a greater degree of operational and financial predictability, large-cap stocks offer investors more consistent and less risky growth, albeit potentially lower than some smaller stocks.

Since asset appreciation was the main driver of total returns for these equities, dividend yields are not very high. However, against the backdrop of the current economic slowdown and the overall market pullback, equities with higher capital gains could be more advantageous for portfolio protection.

Furthermore, these large and established companies might be at a lower risk of dividend cuts, as many have established dividend policies for specific long-term goals regarding dividend distribution levels and long-term payout growth commitments. Furthermore, business models of large companies frequently comprise portfolios of diversified businesses. This diversification puts larger companied in a better position to weather economic troubles than their smaller counterparts.

The list below contains 20 stocks with market capitalizations of more than $2 billion that still maintained overall gains of more than 25% over the past 12 months. Additionally, half of the companies on the list below have hiked their dividend distributions payout for at least the last five consecutive years.

The market capitalizations range between $2.1 billion for Leidos Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:LDOS) to the high of more than $1.1 trillion for the single largest company currently in the market, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT). The group also includes a second company with a capitalization of more than $1 trillion – Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) – which pushed the average capitalization of the entire group to more than $118 billion. The dividend yields range from a marginal 0.3% (NVIDIA Corporation, NASDAQ:NVDA) to 3.7% for The Blackstone Group, Inc. (NYSE:BX) for a simple average yield of 1.3% across all 20 equities.

Three companies on the list below – The Blackstone Group, Inc. (NYSE:BX), the Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ:LRCX) and STMicroelectronics NV (NYSE:STM) – have not increased their annual dividend in the last 12 months.. All other equities on the list below have boosted their annual dividend payouts between one and 17 consecutive years – Tiffany & Company (NYSE:TIF) – for an average current streak of nearly five years of consecutive annual dividend hikes.

Despite pulling back from recent highs, the one-year total returns range from 25.5% (Tiffany & Company, NYSE:TIF) to nearly 70% (AudioCodes Ltd., NASDAQ:AUDC) for a 37.7% average total return. Furthermore, the unweighted simple total returns of these 20 equites were approximately 90% over the past three years and nearly 220% over the last five years.

Sorted in ascending order by their one-year total return, below are the 20 with significant market capitalization that preserved for their shareholders total returns of at least 25% over the trailing 12-month period.
