15 Large-Cap Stocks with Very Long Records of Dividend Distributions

By: ,

While sometimes even a couple milliseconds can make a difference between a gain and a loss in the world of momentum investing and flash trading, some investors still look for stocks with reliable long-term dividend income payouts.

For these investors that seek long records of dividend distributions, the list below contains 15 dividend stocks that have been paying dividends for at least 100 years. In addition to more than a century of dividend distributions, all equities on this list have a market capitalization of more than $10 billion and have at least a decade of consecutive annual dividend hikes.

While investors and financial experts still debate whether dividend distributions even benefit long-term performance, back-tested data indicate that securities with rising dividends historically tend to outperform other equities. When it comes to long-term dividend distributions, the equities on the list below certainly deliver, with streaks of dividend payouts between 103 (International Business Machines Corporation, NYSE:IBM and the 3M Company, NYSE:MMM) and 142 years (Stanley Black & Decker, Inc., NYSE:SWK) for an average of 123 years. Furthermore, the companies have boosted their dividends for at least the last 14 years (AT&T, Inc., NYSE:T) and up to 65 years (The Procter & Gamble Company, NYSE:PG) for an average of more than 37 years of consecutive annual dividend hikes.

These long streaks of dividend payouts indicate that these are old end established companies that have the ability to overcome market and economic fluctuations. Another factor that contributed to these equities’ ability to weather bear markets over the long term is size of these companies. Market capitalizations range from $17 billion (Church & Dwight Company, Inc., NYSE:CHD) on the low end to nearly $310 billion on the high (The Procter & Gamble Company, NYSE:PG) end for an average capitalization of more than 120 billion.

Currently, three of the equities below — Church & Dwight Company, Inc. with 1.31%, (NYSE:CHD); PPG Industries, Inc., (NYSE:PPG) with 1.54% and Stanley Black & Decker, Inc., (NYSE:SWK) with 1.76% — have dividend yields below the average market level of approximately 2%. However, with the remaining equities exceeding the average and delivering current forward dividend yields of up to 5.36% (AT&T, Inc., NYSE:T), the group’s 3.16% simple average yield is more than 50% above market average.

The equities on the list below complemented their steady dividend distributions with relatively reliable asset appreciation as well. Only two companies have total losses over the trailing 12-month period. Three companies have current losses over the last three years and only one delivered a total loss over the past five years. However, despite rising dividend payouts, only Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) has delivered total losses to its shareholders over the last one, three and five years. However, because the list below sorts the companies by the years of dividend payouts, Exxon with 137 years still occupies third place.
